Video editing is an art of patience and precision. Editors spend long hours perfecting transitions, syncing sound, and crafting stories frame by frame. But the same focus that fuels creativity can also lead to exhaustion if self-care isn’t apart of the process.
I learned that the hard way. As editors, we sometimes find ourselves in marathon sessions, chasing perfection until the early hours of the morning. I mean, who doesn’t want their work to be perfect, right? But I had a wake-up call when Kanye dropped one of his albums and people said he turned it in minutes before the release date and still kept editing after it was out. I remember thinking, “Wow, when does it end?” That hit home for me. In my case, when is it time to press export? When is it time to stop cutting and trust the work?
It haunted me for a moment! Not only because I saw something in Kanye that reminded me of myself, but because I realized, if not checked, I may never feel satisfied or truly love my own work.
I needed to find self-care in my creative process ASAP. For me as an editor, that means setting boundaries that protect my creativity. It’s about trusting my decisions in the moment, cutting that interview short, deleting that scene, choosing that song, and standing by it. Because if I truly believe in myself, why be indecisive?
Now, I give myself time limits that naturally bring breaks, even when I’m deep in the zone. I stretch, hydrate, and step away from the screen. It’s wild how much sharper and more inspired I feel afterward.
Editing will always take patience, but it shouldn’t cost me my peace or my sleep! Balance is where my best work begins.
