Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s the beginning of December, and in this economy, it feels like a true blessing to be both paid and full. Despite the somewhat tumultuous terrain of my familial relations, MORTAR has been a fixture of fortitude and growth. I recently completed my first 90 days of employment, and I can honestly say I am full of gratitude, purpose, and hope, and that it is perfect timing for this holiday season.

While I am a firm believer in boundaries (especially in the workplace), MORTAR’s culture has given me space to figuratively and literally let my hair down. I’ve felt confident and comfortable enough to play, ideate, collaborate, and banter with the team in a way that has reawakened my inner child. And speaking of kids… the babes and kiddos are a big part of the magic here. I don’t have children of my own, so it’s a genuine delight to play “office auntie” to the adorable offspring of my coworkers.

The work has been equally satisfying as it has been expanding. From BRICK, all things Academy, to the build-up to Pitch Night, the physical and digital curriculum, and The People’s Feast, we are truly for the dreamers and the doers. I love that there are systems and automations in place that allow me to work smarter. I also appreciate that leadership challenges me to think for myself and provides the space to learn through doing. The team at MORTAR is a force, and I am grateful for their guidance and support as I continue to learn my role and the organization.

Looking back and looking ahead, I can say with confidence that I am hopeful for the future, both personally and professionally. There is still plenty to accomplish, but I know I have everything I need and more than enough of what I want. I’m aware that I’m in a rare group of people who genuinely enjoy their day job. It’s a blessing to get paid and feel full. And as I step into December, I’m recommitting to filling my personal cup, too. I’m itching to get back into the dance studio — as a dancer, a teacher, a choreographer — and I’m excited to reestablish my workout routine so I can continue stylin’ and profilin’, showing up as my best self every day.

“If you want change, how could you stay the same, oh? We’re on our way up. Getting to the pay. Pay. (Live it up) As long as my bills are paid.”
