In his final speech in Memphis, just before his assassination, Martin Luther King Jr. passionately spoke about the inseparable link between economic and racial injustice. He envisioned reaching a mountaintop where a promised land free from racism and poverty could be seen. Dr. King outlined a practical roadmap for economic justice for Black America, emphasizing the upliftment, support, and strengthening of Black institutions.
As we embark on our 10th year at MORTAR, our commitment to these principles guides every aspect of our work as an organization. Throughout the years, we’ve witnessed hundreds of entrepreneurs turning their dreams into reality. This year marks a special milestone as we realize one of our own dreams. Transitioning from leasing space to acquiring and revitalizing a historic bank in Walnut Hills for our future headquarters symbolizes an incredibly profound moment for us. A building that may have once excluded Black-owned businesses will now stand as a beacon for Black excellence, economic growth, and community engagement. The alignment between our vision for the future and Dr. King’s dream is not lost on us, and we take pride in being part of the resurgence in Walnut Hills.
This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we pay tribute to the memory of this visionary leader and renew our commitment to pursuing his dream. Together, let us strive to create a future where everyone, regardless of their race, gender, or background, can stand on the mountaintop of opportunity. Thank you for being a part of our journey.
