Tell us more about your business and your origin story:
Davis Cookie Collection launched in 2014 while I was a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati studying Social Work. I would often take samples of my cookies to class and to my workplace. A huge turning point came when a security officer at my workplace requested an order of Chocolate Chip cookies and offered to pay $15 for a dozen. This is when I realized I had a product that consumers would purchase. I shared my entrepreneurial idea with my husband and the next day, a business was born. I was inspired to launch Davis Cookie Collection for various reasons. My family once owned a restaurant/club in downtown Cincinnati where they offered home cooked meals and desserts from scratch. Artists such as BB King, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard and many more performed there. Even though I wasn’t born yet, hearing these amazing stories over the years inspired me to become an entrepreneur. I also learned various dessert recipes that were passed down from generation to generation, and revamped the recipes with my own unique twist.
What is the PERFECT dessert on your cheat day?
The perfect dessert on my cheat day is Peach Cobbler! Yummy!
Thinking about what you’ve learned on your entrepreneurial journey, if you could go back in time to the day you started your business & tell yourself ONE thing, what would you say to yourself?
I would tell myself that entrepreneurship takes consistency, hard work, dedication, and the willingness to take risks.
If you could only listen to ONE musician/artist/band for the rest of your life, who would that be? Why?
I would listen to William McDowell. His music comforts and motivates me when I hit rough times.
When you reflect on your class experience, what was the biggest takeaway from your time in the MORTAR Entrepreneurship Academy curriculum?
I really enjoyed learning how to determine my target customers and market strategies. I also enjoyed the opportunity to build relationships with my fellow academy classmates who I now call family.
If you could be the mayor of Cincinnati for a day, what’s one thing that you would change?
I would provide more grant opportunities and access to capital for small businesses.
