Learn About MORTAR'S

CURRICULUM

“Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason, mastery demands all of a person.” Albert Einstein

A MASTER IS...

…a skilled practitioner of a particular art or activity. In education, you earn a master’s degree after going through further study to hone your knowledge-base or craft. In music, the master is an original recording from which other copies can be made. Owning your masters means you’re the one entitled to all the fruit and profit from your labors. This is why we named our curriculum MORTAR MASTERS. It represents skill, knowledge, education, originality and ownership. Your participants are learning to become masters of their businesses. They also hope to master the entrepreneurial learnings set forth in this curriculum and beyond, in pursuit of ownership, wealth and leaving a legacy.

"If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all."
Michelangelo

about the curriculum

  • Cultural Competency – MORTAR worked to design the MASTERS curriculum as something that would speak to our main audience: minorities (predominantly African-American), and women. The language, examples, and reference points we have chosen lean in that direction. However, we know that to be successful in business involves code-switching and familiarity with mainstream capitalism and its structures, and engagement with a largely male business community, so we have made attempts to bridge those gaps.

  • Learning Styles – We have differentiated our class experience from others by including multiple learning styles: Visual, Logical, Aural, Verbal, Physical, Kinesthetic, Social, and Solitary. Our hope is that through some means everyone will be able to fully grasp the concepts involved.  We also hope that those who are more adept at a certain learning style will assist others.
  •
  • The Use of Story – We have a treasure trove of MORTAR Graduates, Partners, and Friends who offer poignant accounts of their struggles and successes and wisdom for the next generation of entrepreneurs. We’ve chosen both in print and video to present entrepreneurs from a variety of backgrounds and experiences with the hope that participants will, ‘see themselves’ as they journey through the course.

  •
  • Activities – There are activities in the curriculum that are meant to be fun and engaging. They are learning opportunities. Some of them you can model first or participate along with your class. For others, it is important for participants to learn on their own. People sometimes are nervous about doing new things or having the possibility of failure.  Reassure them that the experience itself is a success.
